What is Muji?
Muji, short for Mujirushi Ryohin, is a Japanese retailer of household and consumer goods operated by Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd. Clothing is one of its main categories, alongside stationery, kitchenware, furniture, electronics and food. Its apparel is described as minimalist and without frills, with a restricted colour palette.
History
The brand was launched in December 1980 as a product line of the supermarket chain Seiyu, initially with around 40 products. Ryohin Keikaku was established as a wholly owned Seiyu subsidiary in 1989 and became the manufacturer and retailer for all Muji products. The first overseas store opened in London in 1991 and the company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1998. A first US store opened in SoHo, New York in 2007.
Business model and distribution
Muji sells through its own stores and an online store. As of the end of August 2024 the company had 1,364 stores in Japan and overseas combined, according to Japanese Wikipedia. English Wikipedia reports that Mainland China is the largest overseas market by store count. Customers can also have goods stamped or embroidered with personal designs in store.
Design approach
Kenya Hara became art director in 2001 and is credited with shaping the brand's design identity. The design process deliberately avoids computers at the prototype stage, with paper models used to keep designs free of unnecessary detail.
Why it matters
Muji shows how an anti-logo, design led private brand can scale into a global lifestyle retailer. For fashion, it is a reference point for basics and for brands that compete on consistency rather than seasonal trends. The company has also faced scrutiny over cotton labelling linked to Xinjiang, reported in 2020 and 2021.
