What is Oasis?

Oasis is a British women's fashion brand that was once a mainstream high street chain. It now operates online within Debenhams Group.

History

Wikipedia dates the Oasis stores to 1991 and does not name a single founder. Oasis grew into Mosaic Fashions, a holding company with brands including Coast, Warehouse, Karen Millen, Whistles and Principles. A management buyout took Oasis private in 2001, followed in 2003 by a buyout backed by Baugur Group and a Kaupthing Bank-led investor group, and Mosaic was listed in Iceland in 2005. Mosaic entered administration in March 2009, and most of its businesses went to Aurora Fashions.

Ownership

Oasis and Warehouse entered administration in April 2020 and administrators did not find a buyer for the business as a whole, with about 1,800 jobs lost. In June 2020 Boohoo announced it would acquire the brands and websites of Oasis and Warehouse for £5.25 million. Boohoo Group rebranded as Debenhams Group in March 2025.

Business model and distribution

Since the 2020 acquisition, Oasis has been sold online. Its physical store network was lost in the administration.

Why it matters

Oasis was one of the defining British women's high street brands of the 1990s and 2000s, and its path from a store chain to a digital-only label shows how legacy brands were absorbed by online groups.
