What is Karen Millen?

Karen Millen is a British womenswear brand known for tailored dresses, workwear and occasionwear. It now operates as an online business within Debenhams Group.

History

Wikipedia reports that Karen Millen and Kevin Stanford founded the company in 1981, starting by making white shirts with a £100 loan and selling them to friends. A party-plan network followed, and the first store opened in Maidstone, Kent, in 1983. Millen sold the company in 2004 to Mosaic Fashions, an Icelandic-owned group, and had no further involvement afterwards.

Ownership

Mosaic ceased trading in 2009 and the brand passed to Aurora Fashions, which was spun out in 2011 under Kaupthing Bank's ownership. The Karen Millen business bought the assets of sister brand Coast in 2018. In August 2019 Boohoo bought the online businesses of Karen Millen and Coast out of administration for £18 million. The standalone stores later closed. Boohoo Group rebranded as Debenhams Group in March 2025, though the legal name remains Boohoo Group, and Wikipedia lists Karen Millen as owned by Debenhams Group.

Business model and distribution

Following the 2019 deal, the brand is sold online. Wikipedia describes the standalone stores as having closed, so current distribution is primarily e-commerce.

Why it matters

Karen Millen is a prominent example of a British high street premium brand being converted into an online-only label inside a fast-fashion group, a model also applied to Coast, Oasis and Warehouse.
