What is Preciosa?
Preciosa is a Czech crystal and glass company headquartered in Jablonec nad Nisou in North Bohemia. It is one of the best-known names in Bohemian crystal, supplying crystal for jewellery, fashion and lighting.
History
Glassmaking in the region is documented from 1548, when a glassworks was founded in Mseno. Crystal cutting arrived in North Bohemia in 1711, and the Preciosa brand name was first registered in Bohemia in 1915. After seven crystal factories and 18 smaller firms in and around Jablonec merged in 1945, Preciosa was officially established on 10 April 1948. It is today a privately owned joint stock company.
Products and positioning
The group is organised into several companies:
- Preciosa, the core crystal and glass business
- Preciosa Chandeliers, for chandeliers and lighting
- Preciosa Figurines
- Preciosa Ornela, for glass beads, formed in 2009
Its crystal ranges include lead crystal, coloured glass and leadless crystal, and the company has added lines such as cubic zirconia and glass closures. Lustry Kamenicky Senov, a chandelier maker, is part of the group.
Why it matters
For the fashion and jewellery industry, Preciosa is a major European source of crystal stones and components, continuing a Bohemian craft tradition that has supplied decorative glass worldwide for centuries.
