What is realmadHECTIC?
realmadHECTIC is a Japanese streetwear label rooted in Harajuku. It began with HECTIC, a skatewear select shop opened in 1994 by former professional skateboarder Yoshifumi Egawa, known as YOPPI, and vintage collector Naotake Magara.
History
In its early years the shop sourced products in the United States from brands such as adidas, PUMA, Polo Ralph Lauren and Helly Hansen and sold them in Japan during the Ura-Hara movement. In 1999 YOPPI moved away from the select shop model and began designing original apparel under the realmadHECTIC name, alongside the subsidiary line MASTERPIECE. In later years the brand adopted a fixed gear cycling aesthetic.
Products and positioning
The label produces streetwear such as T-shirts, outerwear, caps and denim. Its baggy Lot 2G.XX jeans are sought after in today's archive revival. Notable collaborations include:
- adidas Originals Samba projects in 2009
- A New Balance MT580 redesign with mita sneakers
- Fitted caps and partnerships with other Tokyo labels
Why it matters
realmadHECTIC is widely regarded as one of Japan's most revered streetwear brands, and its path from import shop to original label mirrors the growth of Harajuku street fashion into a global influence.
