Sergent Major is a French children's fashion brand sold mainly through its own stores and website. It dresses children from birth to 11 years and is positioned in the mid-range of the market.
History
Paul Zemmour, who had previously run a jeans shop and then a children's clothing boutique, founded Sergent Major in 1987. He set out to build a distribution network in a mid-range segment that was little exploited at the time. A reference source says the name refers to the pens once used at school.
By 2007 the chain had 240 stores in France and 80 abroad, and by 2018 a reference page counted more than 500 stores, although the brand's own site listing differs and the figures are not current. At the end of 2015 Sergent Major took over its competitor Du Pareil au Même, which had been through a long crisis.
Ownership and restructuring
The brand is owned by Générale pour l'Enfant, the group that also owns Du Pareil au Même. In June 2023 the group announced the closure of about 100 Du Pareil au Même stores and about 50 Sergent Major stores. It was placed in judicial reorganisation, and in November 2024 the Bobigny commercial court approved a continuation plan that cut its debt from 185 million euros to 65 million euros.
Products and positioning
Collections change each year around themes in a playful, storytelling world, with slogans such as "Histoire(s) de grandir". The company is based in Montreuil.
