What is STAPLE?
STAPLE is a streetwear label founded in New York City in 1997 by jeffstaple (Jeffrey Ng), a graphic, fashion and footwear designer. It started as a small, hand-made T-shirt line after he sold a first order of 12 shirts to a boutique.
History
The brand's breakthrough came in 2005, when Nike asked jeffstaple to design a sneaker representing New York. The result, the STAPLE x Nike Dunk Pro Low SB "NYC Pigeon", made the brand's pigeon emblem one of the best known logos in streetwear. In 2001 he also founded REED SPACE, an experiential lifestyle boutique.
Products and positioning
STAPLE sells tees, sweatshirts, tops, outerwear, bottoms, headwear, footwear and accessories, with the Pigeon motif shaping much of the range. Collaboration collections, including projects with Marvin Gaye and PEANUTS, remain a core part of the offer.
Distribution
The brand sells online through its own store, with regional storefronts for Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, and through stockists listed in its store locator.
Why it matters
STAPLE is a reference point for how collaborations and a single strong symbol can turn a small New York T-shirt line into an internationally recognised streetwear brand.
