What is Stray Rats?
Stray Rats is a US streetwear brand that grew out of the hardcore punk scene. It was founded in 2010 by Julian Consuegra, who grew up in South Florida and was part of Miami's hardcore community.
History
The brand's first release was the Rodenticide tee. Early sales happened directly at hardcore shows, where Consuegra sold shirts from the boot of his car, and online message boards helped spread the name across the United States. In 2014 Consuegra moved from Miami to New York with J.R. Ewing, a former creative director at FUCT, who became the brand's second partner.
Products and positioning
Stray Rats makes graphic-led apparel that blends punk attitude with graphic design. Collaborations have been central to its profile:
- New Balance 990v3 releases in 2018 and 2019
- The New Balance 827 Sewer Stomper
- New Balance 574, 991 and 580 projects
- An animal print collection with Vans
- A collaboration with Carhartt WIP
Why it matters
Stray Rats shows how subcultural credibility can carry a small label into partnerships with major sportswear brands. Its repeated work with New Balance made it one of the recognisable independent names in sneaker collaborations.
