What is STUDIOUS?
STUDIOUS is a Japanese select shop that focuses exclusively on Japanese brands. Its stated aim is to bring Japanese fashion styles to the world, reversing the traditional select shop model of importing overseas labels into Japan.
History
Founder Masato Tani launched the STUDIOUS business inside Daytona Inc. in 2006. In 2009 he left and established STUDIOUS as an independent company through a management buyout. Tani has led the parent company, TOKYO BASE, as president since 2015.
Products and positioning
The shops present a curated edit of more than one hundred Japanese domestic brands across men's and women's clothing, shoes and accessories. The positioning is premium, centred on contemporary Japanese design and craftsmanship rather than imported luxury.
Distribution
STUDIOUS operates its main store in Harajuku, at Jingumae in Shibuya, with further stores including Shinjuku and an online shop. The business set out plans for overseas expansion from 2015, consistent with its mission to export Japanese fashion.
Why it matters
STUDIOUS was an early retail concept built entirely around domestic labels, and it gave Japanese designers a dedicated multi brand platform. Its success underpinned the growth of TOKYO BASE into a listed fashion retailer.
