What is Via Appia?
Via Appia is a German women's fashion company based in Erlangen in Bavaria. It started out as a knitwear label and has developed into a specialist for fashion in larger sizes, addressing women who define themselves by personality rather than clothing size or age.
History
Via Appia built its reputation on knitwear and in the early 2000s complemented its knitwear line with Via Appia Due, a line developed for larger sizes. For a period the company also produced the knitwear collection of Otto Kern under licence. Later it added frapp, a young plus-size label, and in 2016 it acquired the trademark rights to Passport with a view to offering a knitwear collection under that name. Joachim Weisz served as managing director at the time.
Products and positioning
Via Appia's online shop targets women in sizes 44 to 54 and offers:
- Shirts, tops and knitwear
- Blouses and tunics
- Trousers, skirts and jeans
- Jackets and dresses
Distribution
The collections are sold through fashion retailers and department stores in Germany as well as through the brand's own online shop.
Why it matters
Via Appia shows how a regional knitwear specialist repositioned itself around the plus-size market, building a family of labels for different ages and style preferences within that segment.
