What is Vibram FiveFingers?
Vibram FiveFingers is a line of minimalist footwear from the Italian company Vibram, best known for its rubber soles. The shoes have individual pockets for each toe and a thin, flexible sole, intended to let wearers move as if barefoot.
History
The concept was invented by Robert Fliri, a design student from Vinschgau, who wanted a better way to move around in nature. The shoe was developed and introduced in 2005, and early in 2006 it reached 25 stores in the United States. Originally aimed at yacht racers and used for sailing, kayaking and camping, it gained wider attention when runner Ted McDonald, known as Barefoot Ted, wore it at the 2006 Boston Marathon. Interest grew further with the barefoot running movement around 2010.
