What is 66°North?
66°North is an Icelandic clothing brand best known for outerwear. It was founded in 1926 in Sudureyri, in Iceland's Westfjords, as Sjoklaedagerd Islands, which translates as the Fishermen's clothing factory of Iceland.
History
The founder, Hans Kristjansson, moved to Norway to learn tailoring and sewing for fishermen's clothing before starting the company. The name refers to the Arctic Circle latitude line, which touches Sugandafjordur. The brand has supplied Icelandic search and rescue teams since 1928, and since 2011 it has been owned by the couple Helgi Oskarsson and Bjarney Hardardottir, who call themselves brand guardians.
Products and positioning
The range covers men's and women's down jackets, shell and light jackets, parkas, insulated jackets, rainwear and vests, as well as tops, bottoms, bags, hats, gloves, scarves and socks. Products are grouped by activity, including everyday wear, swimming, running, hiking, skiing and golfing.
Distribution
The company has run its own factories since 1926, although most production now takes place in Europe. Its website lists stores in Iceland, Denmark and the United Kingdom. It became a certified B Corp in 2021.
