What is Alleira Batik?
Alleira Batik is a Jakarta-born fashion house that presents batik, Indonesia's traditional wax-resist textile, as modern clothing rather than heritage dress. Its guiding idea is an East meets West design philosophy, pairing eastern accents in colour, pattern and texture with contemporary cuts. It has grown into one of Indonesia's largest batik retailers.
History
The business was started in 2005 by four founders, beginning in a garage in Jakarta. It expanded through its own Alleira boutiques and showed collections at fashion events in Singapore and New York. In April 2011 it opened its first boutique outside Indonesia, a flagship at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, trading internationally as Alleira International.
Products and positioning
The label works across several lines:
- Ready-to-wear with contemporary designs and batik-inspired prints
- Cocktail pieces in luxe fabrics such as chiffon and silk
- Bespoke couture made from 100% batik silk, hand-painted so no two pieces are alike
- Batik uniforms for corporate clients and handicrafts made from leftover batik fabric
Bespoke batik is printed at the company's own workshop in Indonesia.
Why it matters
Alleira shows how a craft-based national textile can be turned into a branded retail proposition with its own boutiques, corporate uniform business and international flagship, giving batik a contemporary commercial identity.
