What is American Apparel?

American Apparel is a Los Angeles-based clothing brand best known for T-shirts and everyday basics. It was founded in 1989 by Dov Charney, a Canadian businessman, and became one of the better-known casualwear names of the 2000s.

History

The company moved to downtown Los Angeles in 2000. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 5 October 2015. In January 2017 the Canadian manufacturer Gildan Activewear bought the business for US$88 million. Charney started a separate company, Los Angeles Apparel, in 2016.

Products and positioning

The range centres on blank and branded basics such as T-shirts, with additional lines in underwear, swimwear and children's clothing. The brand has marketed itself on ethical manufacturing claims, although later advertising describes products as globally sourced, and most apparel is reported to be made in Honduras and Nicaragua.

Business model and distribution

At its peak the company ran more than 200 retail locations in 20 countries, according to a 2008 figure. After the bankruptcy it relaunched as an online-only retailer. Current store counts are not documented in the sources reviewed.

Ownership note

Public sources describe Gildan as the owner following the 2017 acquisition. Because ownership of heritage brands has changed hands frequently, readers should check the current position with the company.
