What is Anne Cole?
Anne Cole is a United States swimwear brand for women, named after its founder, the designer Anne Cole (1926 to 2017). Today the brand is owned by InMocean.
History
Anne Cole was the daughter of Fred Cole, founder of the knitwear and swimwear company Cole of California. She joined the family business in sales and marketing in 1951 and designed swimsuits there for decades. Her swimwear line began as a division of Cole of California, and the eponymous Anne Cole Swimwear brand was created in 1982. In the company's early era, its designs were worn by stars including Esther Williams, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.
Products and positioning
The brand is credited with inventing the tankini in 1998, a two piece combining a tank style top with bikini bottoms, which later inspired variations such as the camikini and bandeaukini. The range includes:
- One piece swimsuits and tankinis
- Bikinis and cover ups
- Anne Cole Active, a women's activewear line launched in 2021
Why it matters
Anne Cole links today's swimwear market to the golden age of Californian swimwear. The tankini, now a standard category across the industry, remains one of the most lasting innovations in women's swimwear design.
