What is Beijing Watch?
Beijing Watch (北京手表厂, the Beijing Watch Factory) is one of China's historic watch manufacturers. It was established in Beijing in 1958 and today makes mechanical watches, watch movements, components and precision machinery.
History
The factory began as a state-owned enterprise and in its early decades catered to high-level officials. It became privately owned in 2004. In October 2016, Shenzhen-based watch group FIYTA took over ownership, and Beijing Watch now operates as part of that group.
Products and positioning
Beijing Watch positions itself at the upper end of the Chinese watch market. Its activities span:
- Mechanical wristwatches under the Beijing name
- Movements developed and produced in-house
- Watch components and precision machinery
Vintage pieces from the factory, such as the Double Rhomb models, are also sought after by collectors of Chinese watches.
Why it matters
As one of the founding names of modern Chinese watchmaking, Beijing Watch represents the domestic industry's effort to build credible mechanical watch brands with their own movements, now backed by one of China's largest watch groups.
