What is Betts?
Betts is a footwear brand and retailer from Australia, operated by Betts Group, which describes itself as the country's largest privately owned footwear group. The company is based in Osborne Park, Western Australia, and is run by the fifth generation of the founding family.
History
The business began in 1892 as Breckler Brothers, a boot repair shop in Fremantle founded by Russian immigrant Yoel Breckler. After his death in 1912, his wife Fanny Breckler and their sons continued the business. Andrew and Danny Breckler took over in 1985. Over time the group developed several retail formats, including the Betts brand, formerly Betts and Betts, and the comfort footwear chain Airflex.
Products and positioning
Betts has offered contemporary, affordable dress and casual footwear. In late 2025 the brand was repositioned to focus solely on women's footwear and accessories.
Distribution
Betts sells through a network of its own stores in Australia and through its own website. In 2026 the company reduced its store estate and set out a plan to move towards an online led business.
Why it matters
Betts is one of Australia's longest standing footwear names, and its shift towards a narrower women's offer and a greater role for e-commerce reflects wider changes in specialist shoe retail.
