What is Blindness?
Blindness is a fashion label from Seoul, South Korea, run by the designers Shin Kyu Yong (known as Kyu) and Ji Sun (known as Ji), who are a couple. Its focus is menswear with a cross-cultural, historicist approach.
History
Kyu founded Blindness as a commercial brand in 2013, after studying engineering and then graduating from a Seoul fashion school. Ji, who studied furniture design at Hongik University, joined in 2015, and the label as it is known today took shape from that point.
Products and positioning
The collections pair slim leather trousers with oversized shirts in an eighteenth-century spirit, finished with large bows, alongside tech-inspired, sculptural bomber jackets. The long flowing ties on the frilled shirts echo the ribbons on traditional Korean hanbok coats. The designers draw inspiration mainly from film and share an interest in interiors.
Why it matters
Blindness was among the Seoul designers put forward for the LVMH Prize, with its duo presented among the semi-finalists in Paris in March 2017. It is regularly cited as an example of Korean menswear reaching an international audience.
