What is Bucherer?
Bucherer is a Swiss multibrand retailer of watches and jewellery. It began on 2 September 1888 as a hardware shop in Lucerne opened by Carl F. Bucherer and his wife Louise.
History
The business became independent from the Basel Trading Company in 1892 and opened a separate jewellery location in 1897. In 1919 it introduced its first own-branded watch collection, aimed at women. In 1924 Ernst Bucherer partnered with Hans Wilsdorf, adding Rolex to the range. Expansion followed in Germany with a Berlin boutique in 1986 and the 2002 purchase of Munich retailer Andreas Huber, and in the United States with the 2018 acquisition of Tourneau.
Products and positioning
Bucherer stocks brands including Rolex, Carl F. Bucherer, Cartier, Tudor, Longines, Tissot and Vacheron Constantin, among others.
Business model and distribution
Its model is own-store retail. Wikipedia cites more than 100 stores worldwide in 2023, including Lucerne, Interlaken and Lugano.
Ownership
Rolex SA is listed as owner since 2024, after announcing the purchase in August 2023. The page contains a conflicting 2023 reference, so the 2024 completion date is the one used here.
Why it matters
Bucherer is one of the world's largest luxury watch retailers, and its ownership by Rolex is a notable example of a manufacturer taking control of a key retail partner.
