What is Rolex?
Rolex SA is a Swiss maker of luxury wristwatches headquartered in Geneva. It also owns the sister brand Tudor. The company is privately held and controlled by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, and it discloses very little financial information. Jean-Frédéric Dufour, formerly head of Zenith, has been chief executive since 2015.
History
Hans Wilsdorf, a German-born businessman, founded the company in London in 1905 with his brother-in-law Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf and Davis. Wilsdorf bet on the then unfashionable wristwatch and registered the Rolex name in 1908. The business moved to Switzerland after the First World War and became Montres Rolex SA in Geneva.
Rolex introduced the Oyster, an airtight and waterproof case, in 1926 and the self-winding Oyster Perpetual rotor in 1931. Post-war icons followed, including the Datejust (1945), Submariner and Explorer (1953), GMT-Master (1955) and Day-Date (1956). After Wilsdorf's death in 1960 the foundation he had set up in 1944 took control. In 2023 Rolex agreed to acquire Bucherer, one of its largest retail partners.
Products and positioning
- Professional models such as Submariner, GMT-Master II, Daytona and Explorer
- Classic models such as Datejust, Day-Date and Oyster Perpetual
- Proprietary materials such as 904L steel and Cerachrom ceramic bezels
- Tudor as a separately positioned sister brand
Business model and distribution
Rolex sells primarily through a worldwide network of authorised independent retailers rather than its own boutiques, supported by an official service centre network. Limited supply and waiting lists for popular models help control availability. The purchase of Bucherer brought a large retail chain under Rolex ownership, and the company has begun building a new site on Fifth Avenue in New York. Production was estimated at about 1.24 million watches in 2023.
Why it matters
Rolex is the benchmark of the Swiss watch industry in volume, brand value and residual value. Its foundation ownership, wholesale-led distribution and move into retail through Bucherer are closely watched by watch retailers and competitors alike.
