What is Patek Philippe?
Patek Philippe SA is a Swiss watchmaker headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates in the canton of Geneva, with additional operations in the Vallée de Joux. It is privately owned by the Stern family and describes itself as the last independent, family-owned Genevan watch manufacture. Thierry Stern has been president since 2009, representing the fourth generation of the family at the company.
History
The company was founded in Geneva in 1839 by Polish émigrés Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek as Patek, Czapek & Cie. French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, inventor of a keyless winding system, joined later, and the firm became Patek, Philippe & Cie in 1851. The Calatrava cross has served as the company logo since 1887. In 1932, during the Depression, the brothers Charles and Jean Stern, who supplied dials, acquired the company.
The same year Patek Philippe introduced the Calatrava Ref. 96. The Henry Graves Supercomplication was completed in 1933, the Gérald Genta designed Nautilus arrived in 1976 and the Calibre 89, with 33 complications, marked the 150th anniversary in 1989. The Patek Philippe Museum opened in Geneva in 2001.

Since 2009 all mechanical watches carry the Patek Philippe Seal, an in-house standard with an accuracy requirement of minus 3 to plus 2 seconds per day for larger movements.
Business model and distribution
Patek Philippe grows output slowly, producing about 70,000 watches in 2023. It sells through more than 400 retail locations worldwide, mostly independent authorised retailers, plus a small number of its own salons, supported by distribution subsidiaries across Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania.
Why it matters
Patek Philippe sets the reference for haute horlogerie in both craftsmanship and value retention, and its family ownership and controlled supply are often cited as a model for long-term brand management in luxury.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns Patek Philippe?
Patek Philippe has been owned by the Stern family since 1932, when Charles and Jean Stern acquired the company. It describes itself as the last independent, family-owned Genevan watch manufacture, and Thierry Stern is its president.
Why is Patek Philippe so expensive?
Patek Philippe produces a limited number of watches, about 70,000 in 2023, with high levels of hand finishing and complex movements. Its controlled supply and strong value retention at auction support high prices.
