What is Omega?

Omega SA is a Swiss watch manufacturer headquartered in Biel/Bienne. It is the largest and most prominent brand of the Swatch Group, which also owns Longines, Breguet, Blancpain, Tissot, Rado and Swatch. The brand is led by president and chief executive Raynald Aeschlimann.

History

Louis Brandt founded the business in 1848 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, assembling key-wound pocket watches. His sons later moved production to Biel, and the company adopted the name of its successful Omega calibre. In 1930 Omega merged with Tissot to form SSIH, which in 1983 combined with ASUAG during the quartz crisis. Investors led by Nicolas G. Hayek took control in 1985, and the group was renamed the Swatch Group in 1998.

Omega has been official timekeeper of the Olympic Games since 1932. A Speedmaster was worn by Buzz Aldrin on the Moon in 1969, and the Seamaster has been associated with the James Bond films since GoldenEye in 1995. The Omega Museum in Biel presents this heritage.

Products and positioning

  • Speedmaster, including the Moonwatch
  • Seamaster diving watches, including Planet Ocean and Diver 300M
  • Constellation and De Ville dress watches
  • Movements with the Co-Axial escapement, first mass-produced in 1999

Since 2015 Omega has offered Master Chronometer certification, which adds eight tests by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) to the standard COSC chronometer test, including resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss.

Business model and distribution

Omega sells through more than 350 own boutiques as of 2024, through authorised retailers and through its own e-commerce. It benefits from the Swatch Group's vertically integrated supply chain, which makes nearly all components in-house, and from the group's own distribution network.

Omega and technology

Together with Longines and Tissot, Omega is involved in Swiss Timing, the group company that provides timing and data systems for major sporting events including the Olympic Games. In 2022 Omega's Speedmaster design was reinterpreted in the MoonSwatch collaboration with Swatch.

Why it matters

Omega anchors the Swatch Group's position in luxury watches and is one of the few brands that competes with Rolex on volume, heritage and global recognition.
