What is Swatch?

Swatch is a Swiss watch brand headquartered in Biel/Bienne and owned by the Swatch Group, which took its name from the brand. Swatch sells affordable fashion watches, mostly quartz, as well as a smaller range of mechanical models and jewellery. The name is a contraction of second watch, reflecting its original idea of an inexpensive, collectable watch to complement a main timepiece. The Swatch Group is led by chief executive Nick Hayek, son of Nicolas G. Hayek.

History

Swatch was developed in the early 1980s by engineers Elmar Mock and Jacques Müller under Ernst Thomke, then head of the movement maker ETA, as a low-cost Swiss answer to Japanese quartz watches. The first collection launched in 1983. A plastic case and a reduced number of components allowed automated production in Switzerland. In 1985 Nicolas G. Hayek and Swiss investors took control of the parent group, later renamed the Swatch Group.

Products and positioning

  • Original plastic quartz watches in seasonal and artist collections
  • Irony metal watches and the ultra-thin Skin line
  • Sistem51, an automatic movement with 51 components assembled on an automated line, shown in 2013
  • Bioceramic cases made from a ceramic and bio-sourced plastic composite
  • MoonSwatch, a 2022 collaboration reinterpreting the Omega Speedmaster

Swatch also introduced Swatch x You in 2017, allowing customers to design their own watch.

Business model and distribution

Swatch sells through its own stores, retail partners and its own online shop. The MoonSwatch launch in 2022 drew long queues at selected Swatch stores and sold out on launch day, and the brand later restricted online sales of that collection to steer customers into stores.

Swatch and technology

Swatch has put NFC chips into some quartz models for contactless payment. Swatch Pay, launched in 2017 for the Chinese market, connected watches to a payment service run with several Chinese banks.

Why it matters

Swatch is widely credited with helping to save the Swiss watch industry in the 1980s by combining automation, design and marketing. The MoonSwatch showed how a cross-brand collaboration inside a group can bring new customers into a luxury brand's universe.
