What is Carrera?
Carrera is an eyewear brand that began in 1956 as the sports eyewear maker Wilhelm Anger Werker in Austria. It is now owned by Safilo Group, whose headquarters are in Padua, Italy, and makes sunglasses and sports eyewear.
History
In 1964 founder Wilhelm Anger developed and patented Optyl, a heat-hardened plastic about 20 per cent lighter than acetate. In 1974 the company was renamed Carrera International, set up headquarters in Traun, Austria, and partnered with Ferdinand Alexander Porsche on the Carrera Porsche Design line. During the 1980s Carrera sponsored the America's Cup, the 1988 Winter Olympics and Formula 1.
Ownership
Safilo acquired Carrera in 1996. Trade coverage of the brand's 65th anniversary was issued by Safilo, which continues to run the brand within its eyewear portfolio.
The brand's history shows how a materials innovation, Optyl, and long-running sports sponsorships shaped an eyewear name that later became part of a larger Italian eyewear group.
