What is Colmar Originals?
Colmar Originals is a lifestyle line launched in 2009 by the Italian company Colmar. It is centred on quilted jackets with a more urban style, which became a major hit. The line later expanded to sweatshirts, T-shirts and shoes.
History
Colmar was founded in 1923 in Monza, Italy, by Mario and Irma Colombo as Manifattura Mario Colombo & C. The name combines the founder's surname and first name: COLombo MARio. The first major product was felt for hats and gaiters, followed in the 1930s by work overalls made from specially treated cotton.
Products and positioning
Later notable products include the Thirring cape, Sahara jackets for the French Foreign Legion after the Second World War, and ski suits. In 2016 the company introduced a ski jacket with graphene in the back lining.
Why it matters
Colmar Originals shows how a technical skiwear house can use its heritage to build an urban lifestyle line, with the quilted jacket as the product that carried the move.
