What is Decathlon?

Decathlon is a vertically integrated sports retailer: it designs most of the products it sells under its own brands and distributes them through its stores and websites. The company says it handles research and development, production and supply chain in-house, with design centres including a mountain headquarters at the foot of Mont Blanc and a cycling headquarters in Flanders.

History and ownership

Michel Leclercq opened the first Decathlon store in the Lille area in 1976. The concept of a large store offering many sports at low prices grew rapidly in France and then internationally. The holding company was previously known as Oxylane. According to Wikipedia, Decathlon is controlled by the Association Familiale Mulliez, the holding of the Mulliez family, which is also behind retailers such as Auchan. In 2025 Javier López succeeded Barbara Martin Coppola as chief executive.

Products and positioning

Decathlon targets the value end of the market, with an offer that spans dozens of sports. In March 2024 it simplified its brand architecture into category specialist and expert brands, such as:

  • Quechua and Forclaz for hiking and camping
  • Van Rysel, Rockrider, Riverside and Btwin for cycling
  • Kiprun for running and Kipsta for team sports
  • Simond for climbing and Wedze for skiing
  • Domyos for fitness

Business model and distribution

The company operates around 1,900 stores in more than 80 countries and regions, according to Wikipedia, alongside e-commerce sites and an online marketplace for third-party sellers in several markets. In some countries it also works with franchise and retail partners. In April 2025 it began selling a 30 per cent stake in its China business.

Why it matters

Decathlon shows the power of vertical integration in sporting goods: by controlling design, sourcing and retail, it can offer technical products at low prices and compete with both specialist brands and generalist retailers. Its brand architecture overhaul and expansion of private label performance products are closely watched by sportswear brands that depend on wholesale.
