What is SIMOND?
SIMOND is the climbing and mountaineering brand of Decathlon, rooted in Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc. Its mission statement is "performance by fair means", built on lightness, dynamism, honesty and heritage.
History
The story starts in 1860 with Auguste Simond, the family's first blacksmith. His nephew Adolphe opened the first workshop on the Arve river in 1870, joined by his brothers François and Michel in 1883. The family forged ice axes, crampons and later carabiners, and in 1929 co-created the Lagarde ice axe with the Groupe de Haute Montagne. A 12 point crampon was among its later innovations. SIMOND is now part of the Decathlon group, and its factory and heritage space in the Chamonix valley can be visited.
