What is Gerry Weber?
Gerry Weber is a womenswear brand that for decades was one of the largest German fashion suppliers, known for accessible, wearable collections for women. Originally based in Halle (Westfalen) in North Rhine-Westphalia, the brand has since 2025 been owned by the Spanish Victrix Group, a family owned textile company and parent of Punt Roma.
History
The company was founded in 1973 as Hatex KG by Udo Hardieck and Gerhard Weber. It grew into a listed fashion group whose shares were traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, with a large network of own stores across Germany and Europe. Its decline came in stages:
- January 2019: first insolvency filing, followed by store closures
- 2020: proceedings ended, but creditors agreed to defer part of their claims during the pandemic
- March 2025: third insolvency proceedings in six years
- 2025: the company closed its remaining stores, gave up its Halle headquarters and auctioned fixed assets
Change of ownership
During the 2025 proceedings, Victrix acquired the international Gerry Weber brand rights in an asset deal, approved by the creditors' committee and the provisional administrator, and also took over the Samoon brand. Victrix said it would handle design and production and sell the brand through retail partners in Germany, positioned in the upper mid price segment.
Business model and distribution
Under the former owner, own retail was a major channel alongside wholesale. Under Victrix the model has shifted towards wholesale partners and online sales: a new company, Gerry W Online DACH GmbH, was set up to run the official online shop for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Why it matters
Gerry Weber is one of the most prominent examples of the structural crisis of German mid market womenswear, in which a vertically expanded store network became unsustainable. Its transition to a foreign brand owner using a lighter, partner based model illustrates how traditional German brand names are being preserved as assets rather than as operating companies.
