What is Jack Wolfskin?
Jack Wolfskin makes outdoor clothing, footwear, backpacks, tents and sleeping bags for hiking, trekking and travel. Recognisable by its paw logo, the brand is headquartered in Idstein, near Frankfurt, and sells in more than two dozen countries through its own websites, partner retailers and branded stores.
History
The brand was created in 1981 by Ulrich Dausien in Frankfurt am Main as a trademark of the outdoor company Sine. It initially sold through specialist shops before opening its first own store in Heidelberg in 1993. Ownership has changed many times:
- 1991: sold to Johnson Outdoors
- 2002: acquired by Bain Capital
- 2005: sold to Quadriga Capital and Barclays Private Equity
- 2011: acquired by Blackstone
- 2017: creditors took control after a financial restructuring
- 2019: acquired by Callaway Golf, later Topgolf Callaway Brands
- 2025: acquired by Anta Sports for about 262 million euros, completed on 2 June
Products and positioning
Jack Wolfskin occupies the mid-market of the outdoor segment, with functional jackets, fleece, trousers, footwear and equipment for men, women and children. It is particularly strong with consumers who use outdoor clothing for everyday wear and travel rather than extreme alpinism.
Business model and distribution
The brand built a large network of franchised stores in addition to wholesale accounts and its own retail, which by 2012 exceeded 500 stores worldwide. It also runs e-commerce in many European markets and an Outdoor Community membership programme. Under Anta Sports, Jack Wolfskin joins a multi-brand portfolio that also includes Fila in China, Descente, Kolon Sport and a large stake in Amer Sports.
Why it matters
Jack Wolfskin's sale to Anta is one of the clearest signs of Chinese sportswear groups buying established Western outdoor brands. For the German outdoor market, its next phase as part of a Chinese multi-brand group will be closely watched by retailers and competitors.
