What is Kloke?
Kloke is an Australian label based in Melbourne, founded in 2011 by couple Amy and Adam Coombes. Before starting the brand, both had worked with Melbourne fashion labels including Gorman, FAT and Alpha60.
History
The label started small and grew steadily, opening its first store on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, designed with Sibling. It has also produced uniforms for clients such as Hotelhotel in Canberra, and by the early 2010s it was being picked up by stockists in Japan. Kloke has since operated retail spaces in other Melbourne neighbourhoods, including Collingwood.
Products and positioning
Kloke makes functional, hard-wearing clothing with technical yet tailored garments. Collections have drawn inspiration from the sea, military splinter camouflage, parachute prints and the earth's fault lines. The founders favour a considered approach in which each collection evolves from the previous seasons rather than chasing fast trends.
- Technical and tailored garments
- Ready-to-wear collections
- Uniform commissions
Why it matters
Kloke is part of Melbourne's independent design scene, showing how a small label can build a clear identity through function-led design and its own retail spaces.
