What is Lilly Pulitzer?
Lilly Pulitzer is a US fashion brand known for bold, colourful printed resort wear. It was founded by Lillian "Lilly" Pulitzer, who began selling dresses in Palm Beach after running a juice stand there in 1958, and became president of Lilly Pulitzer, Inc. in 1959.
History
From the early 1960s the brand's prints were produced by Key West Handprint Fabrics in Florida, with many designed by Suzie Zuzek. The rights to the brand were acquired in 1994 by Sugartown Worldwide, which Oxford Industries bought in December 2010. Corporate offices are in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
Products and positioning
The core offer is women's warm-weather clothing, swimwear, shoes and accessories, complemented by childrenswear, stationery, tableware and décor. A bridal line followed in 2010, menswear returned in 2024 as Men's Stuff, and the 2024 Lilly's Vintage Vault collection revived archive prints.
Distribution
Lilly Pulitzer sells online, through more than 60 company-owned stores and over 70 Signature Stores, and via retailers such as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Belk and Von Maur, with a focus on East Coast resort areas as well as Texas, California and Hawaii.
Why it matters
The brand is a long-running example of print as brand identity and of a mixed model combining owned retail, partner-operated stores and department store wholesale.
