What is Tommy Bahama?

Tommy Bahama is a resort lifestyle brand based in Seattle's South Lake Union district. Its clothing and home ranges build on a laid-back, island-living image, and the brand extends that idea into hospitality through restaurants and bars attached to some of its stores.

History

The company was founded in 1993 by Tony Margolis and Bob Emfield, who developed the concept together with their wives. Oxford Industries took full ownership of Tommy Bahama Group in 2003, and the brand has since operated as one of the group's main labels.

Products and positioning

The core offer is men's and women's sportswear, including activewear, denim and swimwear, complemented by footwear, accessories and home furnishings. Licensing partners produce eyewear, watches, umbrellas, luggage, hats and fragrances under the name, and the brand launched its own rum in 2007.

Distribution

  • More than 160 company-owned stores worldwide, 14 of them including a Tommy Bahama restaurant and bar
  • US department stores such as Nordstrom, Macy's, Dillard's and Neiman Marcus
  • Licensed international stores in markets including Canada, Japan, Australia and the UAE
  • Resort locations and its own e-commerce site

Why it matters

Tommy Bahama shows how an apparel label can be built into a full lifestyle concept, using food and beverage, licensing and home products to reinforce a clearly defined brand world.
