What is Lois?
Lois is a Spanish denim brand selling jeans, corduroy trousers and jackets, much of it inspired by its own archive. Its label features a Spanish fighting bull, intended to symbolise the toughness of denim and the brand's origin. The current ownership and licensing structure has changed several times and is not fully documented in public sources.
History
The Sáez Merino brothers from Millares in the province of Valencia started the brand at the beginning of the 1960s, usually dated to 1962, after opening a cloth mill that produced its own denim. The name is said to derive from Luis, a family member's name. Lois reached its peak in the 1970s, selling well in the Netherlands, the UK, Germany and Canada, and was worn by ABBA, Björn Borg, Johan Cruyff and Rod Stewart. From 1987 to 1989 it sponsored the Minardi Formula 1 team. The arrival of US multinationals weighed on the brand, and the Sáez Merino group entered insolvency proceedings in the 1990s. Manufacturing by the group ended in 2008.
Products and positioning
Today Lois trades largely on heritage, with re-editions of 1970s and 1980s styles such as thin cord jackets and flared jeans alongside contemporary fits. It sits in the mid-market.
Business model and distribution
After 2008 the Talavera de la Reina company Six Valves took over the licence to market the brand in Spain. Separately, a revival led from Amsterdam since 2014, with former Diesel and Tommy Hilfiger creative director Arthur van Rongen as co-owner alongside the founding family, has focused on international markets through retailers and online sales.
Why it matters
Lois is one of the best-known European denim brands of the 1970s and a case study in how archive-rich heritage labels can be revived through licensing and new partnerships after the original company has failed.
