What is RÆBURN?
RÆBURN is a British fashion brand and design studio led by its founder and creative director Christopher Ræburn. Its stated mission is changing the world through responsible design.
History
The brand was formed in 2009, when a single 28 foot pilot's parachute was cut into eight garments. That project gave rise to the RÆMADE concept that still sits at the heart of the label. The studio is located in the Design District on Greenwich Peninsula in London, where it houses the design team, the RÆMADE atelier and the archive. Many earlier pieces are held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Products and positioning
RÆBURN works to three principles:
- RÆMADE: starting from existing materials and artefacts, such as military parachutes and flight suits
- RÆDUCED: doing more with less through considered materials such as organic cotton and Merino wool
- RÆCYCLED: using recycled fibres and designing for circularity
Signature products include parachute based outerwear such as the Parachute Parka, the Pop Out Parka, the Poncho and the Trench. Beyond collections, the studio works on one off pieces, installations, film and products for scaled production with partners.
Why it matters
RÆBURN was an early proponent of remaking surplus materials into fashion and remains a reference point for circular design in British menswear and outerwear.
