What is Rodier?

Rodier is a French fashion house that describes itself as a maison de maille, a knitwear house. It is based in Paris and sells knitwear and ready-to-wear for women and men.

History

The house was established in the 19th century by Eugène Rodier, who first gained recognition by reinterpreting Kashmir shawls. The Rodier mills became a laboratory for new yarns and textures, developing an early spun rayon and the fabric Kasha. In 1916 Coco Chanel took a knitted jersey from Rodier's stock, and together with Jacques Rodier turned a material previously used for men's underwear into one of the defining fabrics of 20th century fashion.

Rodier entered ready-to-wear in 1956 with fine knitwear, later adding coats, accessories and women's separates. Samy Marciano has owned the brand since 2004. In 2016 Rodier reduced its store network and refocused on e-commerce, keeping a flagship on avenue Victor Hugo in Paris.

Products and positioning

The current range centres on knitwear, including pullovers, cardigans and twin sets, complemented by dresses, skirts, trousers, coats and accessories, with a growing menswear offer.

Why it matters

Rodier links French textile heritage with a digital first retail model, a path many legacy mid sized brands are now following.
