What is ROHDE?
ROHDE is a German shoe brand headquartered in Schwalmstadt, Hesse. It is best known for slippers, and since 2021 it has concentrated on slippers, sandals and comfort shoes.
History
The company traces its origins to the Louis Rohde tannery, founded in Guben, Brandenburg, in 1862. Erich Rohde took over the shoe factory that grew out of it in 1926. After moving west, he founded the Schwälmer Hausschuhfabrik in 1947 with five workers, and the company opened its own production the following year. It later added sites in Bad Kreuznach and in Hallein, Austria, and in the 1970s expanded from women's shoes into men's and children's models.
ROHDE went through insolvency proceedings in 2007 and 2016. In 2017 the Italian Inblu Group acquired the company. A rebranding followed in 2021, together with digitalisation and the launch of an online shop, and the company has since invested in automated logistics in Schwalmstadt.
Distribution
ROHDE sells to shoe retailers across Europe, runs a factory outlet in Schwalmstadt and sells directly through its online shop.
Why it matters
ROHDE shows how a traditional German family manufacturer can be refocused on a core category under new international ownership.
