What is SUKETDHIR?
SUKETDHIR is an India based menswear label led by designer Suket Dhir. Its collections pair Western tailoring with elements drawn from Indian dress, such as relaxed proportions and lightweight fabrics.
History
In January 2016 the label won the 2015/2016 International Woolmark Prize for menswear, announced at Pitti Uomo in Florence. The jury's decision was unanimous, and the prize included funding, mentoring from industry figures and the sale of the capsule collection created for the competition.
Products and positioning
The label is known for applying traditional handcraft to modern menswear. Its prize collection used:
- Ikat, a technique of hand tied and dyed yarn producing an ombre pattern
- Kasuti, a traditional hand embroidery forming geometric, grid like patterns
- Seamless moulding and heat setting to reinforce garments
Distribution
Following the prize, the capsule collection was stocked by international retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, 10 Corso Como in Milan, Isetan Mitsukoshi in Japan, David Jones in Australia, Boon The Shop in South Korea and MatchesFashion online.
Why it matters
SUKETDHIR's win made it one of the first Indian menswear labels to gain broad international retail exposure, showing how handcraft techniques can be applied to contemporary tailoring.
