What is Tally Weijl?

Tally Weijl is a Swiss womenswear brand and retailer targeting young customers with affordable fashion. It is privately held and has its head office in Basel.

History

The company was founded in 1984 by Tally Elfassi-Weijl and Beat Grüring. Until 2016 collections were mostly created in Paris. In 2016 the design centre and the service and support centre moved to Basel, with one trend team remaining in Paris. Sales were about CHF 420 million in 2015, and in 2017 the company acquired the 69 stores of the French fashion company Mim.

Business model and distribution

Tally Weijl directly runs about half of its retail spaces, while franchise partners run the rest. As of 16 March 2019 it counted 785 stores across 35 countries, with Italy (202), Germany (130), France (125) and Switzerland (71) as the largest markets, followed by Austria and Greece with 41 each and Poland with 36. Franchise stores include locations in Saudi Arabia. Logistics run from centres in Lörrach for Central and Eastern Europe, Zofingen for Switzerland and Milan for southern Europe.

The brand also operates country-specific online shops that deliver across Europe, with sites for Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Poland and Greece and Cyprus.

Why it matters

Tally Weijl is one of the few Swiss fast fashion chains with a Europe-wide footprint. Its mix of own stores and franchise partners, and its move of design functions to Basel, show how a mass-market label can balance control with international reach. The store figures above are dated 2019, and the current count was not verified.
