What is White Mountaineering?
White Mountaineering is a Japanese ready-to-wear label designed by Yosuke Aizawa. Its philosophy is summed up in the line "The field in which we wear clothes is all outdoors", and its collections combine three elements: design, utility and technology.
History
Aizawa, born in 1977 and a graduate of the Department of Product and Textile Design at Tama Art University, launched the brand in 2006 with its autumn/winter 2006 collection. In 2019 he also became creative director of the football club Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, and from spring/summer 2020 he designed LARDINI by YOSUKE AIZAWA for the Italian tailoring house Lardini.
Products and positioning
The label covers men's and women's ready-to-wear as well as shoes, bags, hats and accessories. It also runs two additional lines:
- BLK, focused on solid black items
- Repose Wear, for relaxed clothing
White Mountaineering has worked on collaborations including Moncler W, BURTON THIRTEEN and adidas Originals by White Mountaineering.
Why it matters
The brand is part of a group of Japanese labels that brought technical outdoor references into designer fashion, and its collaborations with sportswear and luxury outerwear brands have extended its reach well beyond Japan.
