Who is Luciano Benetton?

Luciano Benetton, born in Treviso in 1935, is one of the founders of Benetton Group, the Italian fashion company best known for its United Colors of Benetton brand. Together with his siblings Giuliana, Gilberto and Carlo he built a family business from the Veneto into an international retail network and a wider family holding company.

Career

The company was founded in 1965. It started with brightly coloured knitted sweaters, made by Giuliana Benetton on a home knitting machine. The use of colour in knitwear, at a time when it was often sold in muted tones, became the brand's signature and the basis for its international expansion.

Luciano Benetton served as chairman from 1978 to 2012. During this period the group grew into a worldwide network of stores and became one of the first Italian fashion companies with a truly global retail presence. He also served in the Italian Senate from 1992 to 1994. In 2012 his son Alessandro took over as chairman until 2014.

In 2018 Luciano Benetton returned to the company to lead a turnaround of the struggling clothing business. In May 2024, aged 89, he announced he was stepping down as chairman after the company reported losses of around 100 million euros. The family holding company Edizione, which controls Benetton Group as well as infrastructure investments, has been led by Alessandro Benetton since January 2022.

Influence on the fashion business

Benetton's model was influential in several ways:

  • Building a brand around colour and a clear, recognisable product idea
  • Rapid international expansion through a large network of stores
  • Using bold, socially themed advertising to make the brand a global talking point
  • Creating a family holding structure that diversified beyond fashion

In many markets Benetton was one of the first fashion chains with a consistent store look and international branding, anticipating the global high-street retailers that followed. Its later difficulties illustrate how earlier leaders in mid-market fashion came under pressure from faster, vertically integrated competitors.

Culture and patronage

Beyond the company, Luciano Benetton founded the Imago Mundi collection in 2006, a project gathering small-format contemporary artworks from artists around the world.

Why it matters

Luciano Benetton is a central figure in the history of Italian and international fashion retail. His career spans the rise of global brands in the 1970s and 1980s and the more difficult period in which established chains had to adapt to fast fashion and digital retail.
