What is Benetton?

Benetton, marketed as United Colors of Benetton, is an Italian clothing brand for women, men and children. It is the main brand of Benetton Group, alongside Sisley. The group describes itself as one of the best known fashion companies in the world and lists its headquarters in Villorba, with its registered office in Ponzano Veneto, both in the province of Treviso.

History

Benetton Group was founded in 1965 by siblings Luciano, Giuliana, Gilberto and Carlo Benetton, starting with colourful knitwear. The company became a global franchise led retailer and was listed on the stock exchange before being taken private in 2012. It is now wholly owned by Edizione, the Benetton family holding company.

From 1982 photographer Oliviero Toscani shaped the brand's image, and the slogan United Colors of Benetton followed in 1989. His campaigns on themes such as race, AIDS and war drew wide attention and frequent criticism, and the 2011 UNHATE campaign won the Press Grand Prix at Cannes in 2012.

The past decade has been difficult. After heavy losses Luciano Benetton returned as executive chairman in 2018. In 2024 the board appointed Claudio Sforza as chief executive, and Edizione injected 260 million euros into a restructuring launched that October. According to Modaes, the group's 2024 turnover was 917 million euros, with a loss of 60 million euros, down from 230 million euros in 2023, and about 500 unprofitable stores were closed worldwide.

Products and positioning

United Colors of Benetton sits in the accessible mid market, with a casual, colourful style. Core areas are:

  • Knitwear, its historic speciality
  • Casual womenswear and menswear
  • Childrenswear
  • Accessories

Business model and distribution

Benetton was an early adopter of a franchise model, with partners running stores under the brand, combined with directly operated stores and e-commerce. The group's website cites about 2,700 stores in its main markets, and it has reported online sales at around 13% of the business.

Why it matters

Benetton helped define international franchise retail and brand led advertising in fashion. Its current restructuring is a closely watched case of a heritage mass market brand trying to regain profitability against faster competitors.
