What is Aigner?
AIGNER is a German leather goods brand. The company describes itself as born in Munich in 1965, when the Hungarian-born bag designer Etienne Aigner worked with the businessman Heiner H. Rankl. Leather bags and accessories are the core business, and the Cybill bag is the best known signature style.
History
Etienne Aigner (1904 to 2000) was born in what is now Nove Zamky in Slovakia. According to Wikipedia he moved to Paris in the 1930s, worked for couture boutiques after the Second World War, and moved to New York in 1950, where he introduced the Antic Red bag. The horseshoe A logo first appeared in a 1950s New York collection. Wikipedia notes that two separate companies now carry the name: Etienne Aigner US in New York and Etienne Aigner AG in Munich. AIGNER first showed at Milan Fashion Week in 2009.
Products and positioning
The brand's own site names Christian Alexander Beck as creative director, and a June 2026 trade report quotes him on the new shoe line. Bags are designed in house. Watches, jewellery, eyewear, womenswear, menswear and childrenswear are produced by licensing partners.
Business model and distribution
AIGNER sells through its own shops, an online shop and retail partners. The company moved to a 4,000 square metre site at Zielstattstrasse 27 in Munich in May 2019, which houses a showroom, a pattern-making workshop and an archive.
A June 2026 report by FashionUnited says Aigner is ending its 14-year shoe licence with Shoe.Mission International, which expires on 30 September 2026. Aigner will develop shoes in house, with a first spring/summer 2027 collection for women and men delivered from October. This moves one category from licensing to direct control.
Why it matters
Aigner is one of the few German luxury-leaning accessories brands with an international heritage, and its current shift from licensed to in-house footwear shows how mid-sized houses are reshaping category control. Current ownership is not stated in the sources reviewed.
