What is Alexis Bittar?
Alexis Bittar is an American jewellery and accessories brand created by designer Alexis Bittar in New York. He bought his first block of Lucite in 1990, hand-carved it into jewellery and sold the pieces on the streets of SoHo.
History
In 1992 the fashion director of Bergdorf Goodman discovered his work, and Saks Fifth Avenue, the Museum of Modern Art, Harrods and Isetan followed as stockists. Burberry commissioned his first ready-to-wear jewellery collection in 1998. The first boutique opened on Broome Street in 2004, and the brand grew to 15 stores in the United States.
In 2010 the company partnered with TSG Consumer Partners, and in 2015 it was sold to Carolee, the jewellery arm of Brooks Brothers. After Brooks Brothers filed for bankruptcy in 2020, Bittar reacquired his brand and relaunched it in autumn 2021.
Products and positioning
The core offer is costume jewellery in Lucite, semi-precious stones and metals. Since the relaunch the range has extended to handbags, accessories and home décor, with New York boutiques designed by scenic designer Scott Pask.
Why it matters
Alexis Bittar is a case of a founder regaining control of his label after a corporate sale and rebuilding it as a broader lifestyle brand. His honours include the 2010 CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year award.
