What is Alighieri?
Alighieri is a British jewellery label founded by Rosh Mahtani, who studied French and Italian at Oxford and graduated in 2012. The brand officially launched in 2014 and takes its name from the poet Dante Alighieri.
Products and positioning
Alighieri makes hand-made, antique-style jewellery that is intentionally imperfect, so that each piece is unique. Its biannual collections each draw on a different aspect of The Divine Comedy, with literature and travel as recurring sources of inspiration. Pieces are gold-plated, and the designer uses responsibly sourced materials.
- Necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets
- Antique-inspired, sculptural forms
- Collections built around chapters of Dante's poem
Craft
The jewellery is handcrafted in Hatton Garden, London's jewellery quarter, using the lost-wax casting technique and working with some of the area's oldest suppliers.
Recognition
In February 2020 Mahtani received the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at London Fashion Week, becoming the third recipient of the award.
Why it matters
Alighieri shows how a narrative-driven independent label can build a distinctive identity in jewellery, combining a literary concept with traditional London craftsmanship.
