What is Dickies?

Dickies is an American workwear brand that makes clothing for trades such as construction, automotive, hospitality and healthcare, and has a large following in skate and streetwear culture. Since November 2025 it has belonged to Bluestar Alliance, a brand management company whose portfolio also includes Off-White, Palm Angels and Scotch & Soda.

History

The business traces back to the U.S. Overall Company, established in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1918. In 1922 cousins C. N. Williamson and E. E. "Colonel" Dickie set up the company that became Williamson-Dickie, initially making denim bib overalls for farm and ranch workers. During the Second World War it produced millions of uniforms for the US armed forces, and from the late 1950s it expanded into Europe and the Middle East.

VF Corporation bought the company in 2017 for 820 million dollars. In 2025 VF sold Dickies to Bluestar Alliance; Wikipedia reports that the deal closed on 12 November 2025 at about 600 million dollars in cash.

Products and positioning

Dickies is a mid-market brand built on functional, hard-wearing garments:

  • Work trousers and chinos
  • Work shirts, overalls and jackets
  • Workwear for specialist sectors such as medical uniforms
  • Footwear and accessories

Business model and distribution

Dickies is sold in more than 100 countries, mainly through workwear specialists, department stores, fashion and skate retailers and online. Williamson-Dickie Europe, based in Somerset, England, has overseen Europe and the Middle East.

Why it matters

Dickies is a central example of the 2024 to 2026 wave of portfolio clean-ups, in which groups such as VF sold brands to licensing-led owners. Its transfer to Bluestar will show how a heritage workwear name with genuine streetwear credibility performs under an asset-light brand management model.
