What is Scotch & Soda?

Scotch & Soda is a Dutch fashion brand headquartered in the Amsterdam area. It sells casualwear, denim and accessories for men, women and children, with a style built around prints, layering and references to Amsterdam. Since May 2023 it has been owned by Bluestar Alliance, a New York based brand management company whose portfolio also includes Hurley and Bebe.

History

The brand was founded in 1985 by Laurent Hompes, originally as a menswear label. It remained independent until 2011, when it was sold to Kellwood and the private equity firm Sun Capital Partners. Under these owners it expanded aggressively abroad, opening around 250 branded stores by 2020. Heavy borrowing, losses since 2019 and the effects of the pandemic and rising costs led the Dutch business to file for bankruptcy in March 2023. Bluestar Alliance agreed to buy the brand days later and completed the deal on 11 May 2023. In 2024 the European entity and the German store business also filed for bankruptcy, and European e-commerce was relaunched with a new operating partner.

Products and positioning

Scotch & Soda sits in the premium casualwear segment. Its range includes menswear, womenswear (historically Maison Scotch), childrenswear and the Amsterdams Blauw denim line. In 2020 it added eyewear and fragrance, extending the brand into licensed categories.

Business model and distribution

For most of its history the brand relied heavily on wholesale: at the time of the 2023 sale it was stocked by around 7,000 multi-brand stores and also ran about 250 own stores and online shops in more than 70 countries. Under Bluestar the model has shifted towards a brand management approach, in which the owner holds the intellectual property and works with operating partners and licensees in individual markets and categories. The exact current store footprint is not consistently reported.

Why it matters

Scotch & Soda is a clear example of how quickly an internationally expanded mid-sized brand can run into trouble when debt, store costs and weaker demand coincide. Its move from a vertically run retailer to an asset owned by a brand management company mirrors a wider trend in which groups such as Bluestar and Authentic Brands acquire distressed fashion names and monetise them through licensing and partners.
