What is Eterna?

Eterna is a German brand of shirts and blouses that, together with Olymp, shaped the German and European shirt market for decades. It was operated by Eterna Mode GmbH, headquartered in Passau in Bavaria, and was particularly associated with business shirts sold through menswear retailers and its own stores.

Insolvency and change of ownership

The recent history of the brand is defined by a rapid restructuring:

  • December 2025: shortly before Christmas, Eterna Mode GmbH applied for insolvency proceedings under self administration and initially continued trading
  • Early March 2026: after an unsuccessful investor search, the company decided to cease business operations, with the shutdown planned for summer 2026
  • 16 March 2026: Olymp Bezner KG announced that it had acquired the trademark rights to the core Eterna brand and other registered marks

Olymp's chief executive Mark Bezner said the company was evaluating several scenarios for re-establishing Eterna in the market, and Olymp subsequently set up a dedicated Eterna business unit led by Philipp Lübbenjans, a former Eterna manager, according to the German trade press.

Products and positioning

Eterna's range focused on shirts and blouses for business and smart casual wear, offered in several fits. The brand was positioned in the accessible mid market, competing directly with Olymp and Seidensticker for floor space in department stores and menswear shops.

Business model and distribution

Under Eterna Mode GmbH the brand combined wholesale to retail partners with its own stores and online sales. As the operating company has been wound down, future distribution will depend on how Olymp chooses to relaunch the brand.

Why it matters

Eterna's insolvency and the sale of its brand rights to its main competitor is a defining example of consolidation in German menswear. It shows how a strong brand name can survive the failure of its operating company as an asset in another group's portfolio.
