HMT is a watch brand of HMT Limited, a public sector company headquartered in Bengaluru and controlled by India's Ministry of Heavy Industries. For decades its mechanical watches were among the most familiar timepieces in the country.
History
HMT Limited was incorporated in 1953 as a machine tool maker. In 1961 it opened a watch factory in Bangalore in collaboration with Japan's Citizen Watch, and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru released the first batch of hand-wound wristwatches. The dedicated subsidiary HMT Watches Ltd was closed in 2016 as part of a wider restructuring of the group, and the brand has since made a comeback built on its heritage and nostalgic appeal.
