What is HUF?

HUF is a skate, streetwear and sneaker-influenced fashion brand started under the name of its founder, professional skateboarder Keith Hufnagel. The official site presents it as a label covering clothing, hats, socks, jewellery, bags and skate decks, with regional storefronts for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe.

History

According to trade coverage, HUF began in 2002 with a store of the same name in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, selling skate and streetwear brands including Vans, Stussy, adidas and Nike alongside its own products. A second shop opened on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles in 2015. Hufnagel died at the age of 46, as reported by Apparel News in 2020.

In a press release dated 7 December 2017, HUF Worldwide announced its sale to TSI Holdings, a Japanese company managing a portfolio of apparel brands. Altamont Capital Partners, which had invested in 2014, had owned the company until then. The deal included the Lakai Limited Footwear brand, and the release stated that HUF would continue as an independent global company with headquarters in Irvine, California and creative offices in downtown Los Angeles. A later report put the stake acquired by TSI at 90 per cent.

Products and positioning

  • Apparel: T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, bottoms and shorts.
  • Accessories: hats, socks, jewellery and bags.
  • Skate hardgoods: decks sold through the brand's own channels.

The brand describes its aesthetic as clean and classic, drawing on diverse cultural influences and aimed at skateboarders and people drawn to countercultures.

Why it matters

HUF shows how a single-store skate retailer can become a multi-region apparel brand backed by a Japanese fashion group. Its path, from founder-led shop to private-equity investment to a strategic buyer, mirrors that of several other skate-rooted streetwear labels.
