What is Jeanswest?

Jeanswest is an Australian jeans and casual-wear brand. Wikipedia reports that it was founded in 1972 in Perth, Western Australia, by Alister Norwood, and that its head office is in Hawthorn, Victoria, after the headquarters moved from Perth to Melbourne in 1990.

History

The first store opened in Perth in 1972 and the chain had 28 stores across Western Australia by 1984. It expanded into Queensland in 1985 by buying the Eagle Jeans chain, and into New South Wales in 1987. In 1990 Norwood handed control to Peter Volk and Glorious Sun Group, and in 1992 the chain expanded into Victoria. In January 2020 Jeanswest entered voluntary administration with up to 146 stores, and in February 2020 Harbour Guidance agreed to buy the business in a deal intended to save 106 Australian stores.

Closure of Australian stores

In March 2025 administrators announced that the brand and its more than 90 Australian stores would close, while New Zealand stores were not affected. The online store was later reduced to a store locator banner and then reopened as an online-only operation. In July 2025 Harbour Guidance reacquired the brand through a deed of company arrangement, with unsecured creditors owed about 13 million Australian dollars offered 2 cents in the dollar.

Business model and distribution

Jeanswest now sells online. Wikipedia also lists international markets including China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand, but the current status of each market was not verified.

Why it matters

Jeanswest is a case study in the pressures on mid-sized Australian apparel chains: a long-running store network, an administration in 2020 and a move to online-only trading in 2025. It sits in the same denim-led segment as Just Jeans.
